To have to sell a really nice engine that you obviously spent some time and money on before even getting to enjoy the fruits of your labor. But yet it's for an even nicer engine which you'll probably do the same treatment for.

Unless you have no regret or any sadness selling the hybrid at all. Then is just SWEET Very Happy

Got my garage cleaned up yesterday to facilitate proper working conditions. Afterward I had time before the sun went down to work on preparing the truck to donate it's heart. I removed the air cleaners and found some nice velocity stacks under the cleaners to my suprise. removed the radiator and drained all the fluids. Removed and labeled all the wiring too. Sprayed down the motor mount bolts with some penetrating oil so hopefully they will be easier to get off as well as the carbs and linkage and they are now moving freely. Now it's just a matter of unbolting the bell housing and motor mounts and it should come right out...should.... Smile

So call me a bit of a goof but I see a lot of positive remarks about the 18RG engines. I so love the 22R(E) style and workings that I must of missed something about the other "bad" boy (18RG).

Is it the double carbs that give it the draw, which I could see tuning them a problem plus just having 2 (two)...money! Eek! I have an 18R in my 74 and it’s nothing to write home about. I've done some things that make it a bit mighty but still...Nah. Didn’t they come out about the same time?

Certainly I am NOT down playing your excitement, its great and I’m happy for you, I was just curious what the draw is? I will take a long shot hear and guess…speed!? Laughing

Take care, cya

The 18RG has a dual overhead cam head designed by Yamaha I believe. It has superior flow characteristics compared to its 18R counterpart. I believe the block is the same or based off of the 18R. It's kind of like the difference between the 4AGE and the 4AFE in the 80s-90s corolla. The "G" heads are usually built for performance whilst the more common non-G counterparts are built for economy. There could be more to it, but that's how I understand it.

I thought the G was their code for dual cams. Thus the TG would also have 2 cams. Well that's what I remember anyway, and I'm drinking so... Very Happy

I think I remember reading about this on wikipedia. Am on my cell phone now though, so I'll leave confirmation as an exercise for you, dear reader!

The G in toyota engine codes does stand for twin cam. The draw for me to the 18RG was a few things. Mostly, the ease of installation since it's going back where an 18R used to be. The 22R mounts required modification to fit the celica, and the twin side drafts was a plus. There were other reasons but I don't want to start a debate over wich engine is better. They are both great engines, the 18R was just a better choice for this build and is correct for the car.

I think the question was basically what's the difference between the 18R and the 18RG. He didn't have any knowledge of the 18RG but knew the 18R. Knowing the 18R he wanted to know what made the 18RG so good.

Yep and dual cams usually means a higher performance engine. And I say usually because later that's not the case as in the 4AGE vs the 4AFE and 1ZZFE vs 2ZZGE etc. Both dual cam engines, but one built for economy and one built for performance.

i dont know anything about the ZZ engines BUT, i do know about the 4A motors and there is a HUGE difference in performance between the GE and FE engines. In other engine like the 3SGE and 3SFE they both have "technically" two cams but the GE engines are a true indepentent twin-cam where as the FE engines have a "slave" cam that is driven off the other cam by a gear.

The 18RG is a more desireable engine than the 18RC in terms of performance for a number of reasons. Twin cam head cylinder head is said to be more efficient, the cylinder head is a cross flow design wich is also more efficient. The cross flow twin cam head allowed for faster revs and a higher RPM range. Also the twin side draft carbs made for better and cooler fuel and air delivery. On early 18RG engines the compression was also higher than it's RC sister. Anything i missed feel free to chime in.
